YAMAGE SOKO: A Samurai philosopher who first used the term BUSHIDO, or "way of the warrior," in his writings. Yamage Soko (1622-1685) believed that even in times of peace the SAMURAI must maintain a Confucianist loyalty to the state and strong moral values. He taught that SAMURAI should pursue the arts and develop a strong sense of etiquette.
